Hope On Deck began in 2018 with Earle Van, a young man in recovery who understood addiction not from a textbook, but from lived experience.

After finding recovery and becoming an interventionist and treatment advocate, Earle dedicated himself to helping others find their way out of the darkness he knew so well. He walked the streets of Kensington, Pennsylvania, sat with people in some of their most difficult moments, traveled across the country on outreach missions, facilitated interventions, and helped connect individuals struggling with addiction to treatment.

Earle believed in meeting people where they were—with compassion, empathy, and without judgment.

He also shared his journey and his work openly through social media, allowing thousands of people to witness the realities of addiction, recovery, outreach, and second chances. His honesty and willingness to show both the struggles and the victories created a community that reached far beyond Delaware.

In late 2019, Earle entrusted Hope On Deck to his mother, Dawn, who continued building upon the mission he began.

Then, on December 4, 2023, the unimaginable happened.

After a relapse, Earle lost his life to the very disease he had spent years helping others overcome. He was only 32 years old.

His death was a devastating reminder that substance use disorder does not discriminate and that recovery does not make someone immune from relapse. But Earle's story did not end that day.

Today, Hope On Deck has grown far beyond what Earle first imagined.

Through Earle’s Legacy Resource Center, community outreach, harm-reduction initiatives, recovery support, food assistance, clothing and essential-needs programs, treatment and resource connections, and partnerships throughout the community, we continue the work Earle started.

We serve individuals actively struggling with substance use disorder, people rebuilding their lives in recovery, families and loved ones affected by addiction, individuals experiencing homelessness, veterans, children and families facing hardship, and others who simply need someone to meet them where they are.

We provide food, clothing, shoes, hygiene products, household necessities, Narcan education and distribution, SBIRT screenings, recovery and treatment resources, community referrals, and compassionate human connection.

Because sometimes the first step toward changing someone's life isn't treatment.

Sometimes it's a meal.
A clean shirt.
A pair of shoes.
A conversation.
Or simply having someone look you in the eyes and remind you that you still matter.

Earle once set out to show people struggling with addiction that their lives had value. Today, every person we serve gives us another opportunity to continue that promise.

Hope On Deck will continue to educate, reduce stigma, promote harm reduction, support recovery, strengthen families, meet basic needs, and help connect people with treatment and resources when they are ready.

We cannot change how Earle's story ended.

But every day, we can choose what happens next.

And through every life touched, every person helped, and every moment of hope restored, Earle’s legacy lives on.
