Empty Shoe Project

The Empty Shoe Project: Honoring Lives Lost to Substance Use Disorder

Hope on Deck presents an annual tribute to loved ones lost to substance use disorder. The Empty Shoe Project is a powerful display of remembrance and awareness, featuring over 500 signs and paired shoes that represent the lives touched by addiction. Each sign bears the name, story, and memory of an individual who has passed away due to substance use disorder. The personal descriptions on the back of each sign humanize the struggle, putting faces and stories to the statistics. This poignant exhibit aims to:

  • Pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with addiction
  • Destigmatize substance use disorder and promote understanding
  • Raise awareness about the devastating impact of addiction on families and communities

Resources for Healing

In conjunction with the exhibit, Hope on Deck offers harm reduction resources, including:

  • Narcan availability for immediate response to overdose situations

The Empty Shoe Project strives to create a compassionate community that fosters healing, hope, and recovery by combining tribute, education, and support.
